Vertical Geometry

Vertical geometry for alignments can be described using:

• Described in the Profile section in the LandXML format.

• VPI, circular, and symmetrical parabola elements can be used.

• The vertical alignment must be the same length as the Horizontal alignment.

• The vertical alignment is to the bottom of the ballast level.

Cross-Sections

The cross-sections selected should be for the full extent of all earthworks:

• Cut/fill toe lines

• Bridge abutments

• Tunnel portals

Cross-sections do not need to be specified at regular intervals.

• Issues may arise though if too few or large irregularities in spacing in cross-sections take place.

For rail projects, the cross sections should not include the ballast for the project. The ballast will be modeled using Quantm software.
